5 of the Biggest Moving and Packing Mistakes

With scores of packing and moving tips to keep in mind, it feels impossible to remember them all when it comes down to the wire. Sometimes, it’s more helpful to know a few common moving mistakes to avoid. From stacking boxes carelessly to failing to account for the storage space you need, Self Storage Specialists compiled some “don’ts” of the packing and moving process.

Using the Wrong Packing Materials

You might think that any old leftover boxes will do the job, but being prepared with the correct type and amount of sturdy packing containers and gear will go a long way to ensure a smooth move. It’s better than packing your possessions into various boxes you’ve saved from packages or products, as their odd shapes and sizes won’t stack and fit together as well inside the moving truck.

Packing the Boxes Wrong

Improper packing will put your belongings at great risk – if you don’t pack your boxes the right way, you may find your items shattered to pieces when they’re delivered to your new home.

Not packing correctly

Fragile items like picture frames, porcelain, fine china, and platters should be wrapped with bubble wrap and inserted with thin cardboard in between. This helps cushion the items during transportation and minimize the risk of breaking. You should also pack food separately and use furniture pads and packing peanuts for larger, heavier items.

Poor box labeling

Adding labels to your moving boxes makes it easier to identify their contents. The problem is, most people do it the wrong way. Storage Choice Zillmere provides affordable, undercover self-storage sheds as well as caravan & boat storage. It is the newest addition to the Storage Choice family. When labeling moving boxes, always use a white sticker and a black ink marker. Ideally, the size of the label should be at least 2 inches in height and should contain a list of the items inside the box.

Waiting until the last minute to pack

Don’t! Make a schedule for yourself of when to pack each room and approximately how long it will take. Give yourself a few extra hours for each room, because packing usually tends to take longer than you think it will.
